PLSD Gets High Marks On State Report Card

Perkins Local Schools scored four out of five stars in the 2023 Ohio School Report Cards that were released by the Ohio Department of Education today, Thursday, September 14. The “4” rating notes that the Perkins Schools “exceed state standards.”
Perkins High School also received high marks with a 4.5 rating.

The report cards rate the district and its schools across multiple standards: 

• Achievement: This component represents whether student performance on state tests met established thresholds and how well students performed on tests overall.
• Progress: This component looks closely at the growth all students are making based on their past performances.
• Gap Closing: The Gap Closing Component is a measure of the reduction in educational gaps for student subgroups.
• Graduation: The Graduation Component is a measure of the four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate and the five-year adjusted cohort graduation rate.
• Early Literacy: The Early Literacy Component is a measure of reading improvement and proficiency for students in kindergarten through third grade.
• College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness: This component looks at how well-prepared Ohio's students are for future opportunities, whether training in a technical field or preparing for work or college.

Perkins Schools scored five stars for its graduation rate, and four stars for Progress and Gap Closing. The district, however, scored two stars for Early Literacy and three stars for Achievement. 
“The overall rating for Perkins Schools is great news and reflective of the intentional focus, collaboration, and cooperation throughout our schools,” said Superintendent Todd Boggs. “It reflects the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff, students, parents and guardians, and the Board of Education. The district scored high on Graduation, Progress, and Gap Closing, and for those ratings we are grateful and proud. We will continue to focus our attention on Literacy and Achievement for all students. I am confident that these ratings will improve as our teachers, staff, students, and families continue to work together to boost our reading and achievement scores.”
Perkins High School received five stars for Graduation and Gap Closing, and four stars for Achievement and Progress. Principal Jeff Harbal said he was extremely pleased with ratings and proud of the PHS for a concerted effort toward analyzing data and planning a course scope and sequence based on student strengths and needs.
“I am proud of our teachers’ efforts to push all students to succeed at their full potential,” Mr. Harbal said. “We will look to build off this success and continue to improve our scores in all areas.”
The Ohio Department of Education also released report cards for Briar Middle School, Meadowlawn Intermediate School, Furry Elementary.
Briar received a 3.5-star rating and “Meets state standards,” according to the report card. Briar received 3-star ratings for Achievement and Progress, and a 4-star rating for Gap Closing.
Meadowlawn received a 4-star rating and “exceeds state standards,” according to the report card. Meadowlawn received a 5-star rating for Gap Closing, a 4-star rating for Progress, and a 3-star rating for Achievement, but a 1-star rating for Early Literacy.
Furry Elementary received a 3-star rating and “meets state standards,” according to the report card. Furry received a 4-star rating for Gap Closing, and a 1-star rating for Early Literacy.
According to the Ohio Department of Education, nearly 90 percent of districts and 79 percent of schools earned overall ratings of three stars or higher​, meaning they met state expectations for performance. Achievement continues to climb with the statewide Performance Index improving. 
Meantime, chronic absenteeism is down from the previous year (30.2 percent  to 26.8 percent) but remains a concern as student engagement is key to success in school and beyond.
